The process utilizes specific microorganisms that, when introduced into underground reservoirs, accelerate the decomposition of residual hydrocarbons, generating hydrogen as a byproduct.
How the Technology Works
The technique involves injecting a nutrient solution that stimulates the activity of native or introduced microbes within the well. These bacteria consume the carbon molecules remaining in the oil that can no longer be extracted by conventional means. During this biological metabolism, hydrogen is released and captured at the surface.
Sustainability and Circular Economy
In addition to avoiding the high cost of permanently sealing old wells, this solution offers a low-carbon alternative for energy production. The generated hydrogen is considered “green” or “blue,” depending on the management of residual CO2, directly contributing to global decarbonization goals.
