Nvidia creates the “digital twin” of the Earth capable of predicting climate disasters

Nvidia has created a terrestrial “digital twin” equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) technology that can predict climate disasters more quickly than traditional services, helping to prevent phenomena such as tyoons and floods, as well as providing a more in-depth overview of the long-term effects of climate change and showing ways to mitigate them.

Understand:

  • Nvidia has created a “digital twin” of the Earth with AI capable of predicting and helping to reduce the impact of climate disasters;
  • The Earth-2 system has machine learning and has been trained with global data to simulate terrestrial, atmospheric and oceanic climatic variables;
  • The platform can quickly analyze data on greenhouse gas emissions, temperature, water cycles, soil changes, ocean chemistry and others, building accurate predictive simulations;
  • Taiwan will be one of the first territories to test Earth-2 to predict and plan measures against typhoons;
  • The information is from Nvidia and Live Science.

The Earth-2 platform has machine learning technologies driven by supercomputers and, when combined, create “a virtual replica of a physical object or system, in this case, the Earth’s climate,” explains Dion Harris, head of Data Center Product Marketing at Nvidia, to the WordsSideKick website (via Live Science).

How Nvidia’s new “digital twin” system works

Harris says the new system was trained with global data to “synthesize hundreds of observations and reconstruct the Earth’s time and climate over the past 50 years or more,” performing meteorological and climate simulations at different locations on a detailed scale of 2 kilometers.

By quickly analyzing data on greenhouse gas emissions, temperature, water cycles, soil changes, ocean chemistry and others to build predictive and accurate simulations, Earth-2 can help cities around the world explore the probability and intensity of future changes and climate phenomena to take measures before a catastrophe happens.

Taiwan, which often suffers from catastrophic typhoons, will be one of the first territories to test Earth-2 to predict and plan measures against extreme weather events.
